Iranian Officials Denounce Israel Statement

The AP reports that Iranian officials are denouncing recent claims by Mohammad Ebrahim Dehghani that Israel would be Iran's first target should the United States make any "mischief" in Iran. Dehgani's statement followed Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's promise to "wipe Israel off the map."

Subtly reminded by Simon Peres of Israel's military prowess and desperately trying to save face for buddies China and Russia as a UN showdown draws near, Iran's military establishment has been forced into damage control, but their ambitions are clear. Once armed with the nuclear weapons they are no doubt pursuing, no amount of diplomacy will deter Iran's leadership from seeking to consummate their vision of Islamofascist imperialism. Protected in these early stages by China and Russia (Russia's LUKOIL has major interests in Iran), Tehran is enjoying a perverse amnesty that must be the envy of jihadists the world over. Look for appeasement to follow. Belgium and Poland beware.
